REMARKABLE VOICES | familiar, unknown, from far away

Școala de la Piscu Museum, village Piscu, Ilfov
An exploration of sound art, ethnography, and documentary filmmaking through the lens of voices, marginalized or isolated languages, the representation of migration, and memory based on language, sonority and emotion with the sound artist Félix Blume (FR), ethnologist Laura Jiga Iliescu (RO), artists Giorgia Cadeddu and Vittoria Soddu from the Studiolanda collective (IT), and filmmaker Alexandra Gulea (RO). A program of listening sessions, screenings, and dialogue.
The sonority of voices and language serves as a place for a formal interpretation of what is said, but also as a cultural articulation of the encounter with the other, opening pathways to knowledge through emotion or curiosity.
If individual characteristics define the other in relation to who we are, each of us, how do we listen to voices communicating in regional languages, community languages, marginalized or isolated languages? How do artists listen to the words of people whose life experiences are shaped by linguistic differences? How does the ethnologist ensure the ethical representation of communities whose identity is defined by their difference from the dominant group? How is documented a language that is used less and less? How can a thread of family memory reweave the connection to history?
Here are a few questions we’ll seek to answer over the course of an afternoon at the Școala de la Piscu Museum.

Opening remarks by Anamaria Pravicencu, curator and organizer of the REMARKABLE VOICES project
3:00 pm – Félix Blume (FR): “Voices of Travels and Traveling Voices,” listening session and presentation
4:30 pm – Laura Jiga Iliescu (RO), Giorgia Cadeddu and Vittoria Soddu, Studiolanda (IT), and Alexandra Gulea (RO): listening session and discussion on the representation of minority, marginalized, or isolated languages in ethnographic research and art.
6:00 pm – Alexandra Gulea (RO): screening of the documentary film “Maia. Portrait with Hands”, 2024
7:30 pm – community dinner

The ticket for Școala de la Piscu is 25 lei.
